Rev. Dr. Douglas McQuaig
B.A., M.Div., D. Min., Minister Read Rev. Doug’s Blog
Doug became the minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville when he was inducted in June, 1991. He came to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville from Alma St. Presbyterian Church in Thomas, Ontario, having previously served the congregations of Riverside Presbyterian Church in Windsor, Ontario and Almonte Presbyterian Church in Almonte, Ontario. Doug is married to Liz and they have three grown children and five grandchildren.
During his second year of ministry in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville, Doug led the congregation through a strategic planning process that also served as the On-Site Supervised Project for his Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Doug was awarded his Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Seminary in May, 1993. This Strategic Plan entitled, “An Historic Village Church with a Heartbeat for Today’s City” provided the foundation and direction of the congregation’s ministry over the next ten years.
An important component of Doug’s ministry during those ten years was to lead the congregation through a major expansion and enhancement project that culminated in the completion of a major addition to and the complete renovation of the historic church building. The addition of a new gymnasium-auditorium with completely refurbished educational and congregational facilities was designed to meet the needs of our young families and youth.
A number of passions drive Doug’s ministry and are key to the strengths of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville:
- Preaching / Teaching – On Sunday mornings, Doug prefers to develop thematic series or to work systematically through a section or a book of the Bible. Expositional at its roots, he places considerable emphasis on the practical, life-related application of Biblical principles in daily life.
-
Music and Worship – The principles of faith are not simply learned by the careful study of Scripture. They are also experienced and expressed in meaningful encounters with God and His people. The Sunday worship experience is an essential part of that process. The Sunday worship experience at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville is best described as a blending of traditional and contemporary elements that include a Praise Team accompanied by keyboard, guitars and percussion; lay participation in the reading of Scripture and the enacting of drama; choral presentations by Children’s and Adult Choirs; seasonal liturgies during Advent and Easter.
-
Small Group Ministries – The most effective environment for personal and spiritual growth is in small groups of 8-12 people where study, discussion and personal accountability enable participants to discover and incorporate truths that are real and meaningful to them. Among the many small group ministries at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Streetsville, The Alpha Course and related follow-up ministries provide people with this invaluable experience that can last a lifetime. It is also in the context of these small groups that the most important relationships and friendships are established.

Change, Growth and Renewal – One of the apparent constants in today’s society and in the communities in which we live is change. This is certainly true of our community and our church. Although change can be difficult and disruptive, it can also bring growth and renewal was we try new approaches and as we respond to new opportunities. We are currently involved in Natural Church Development as a process for understanding and managing change as we refocus our ministry for the future.
